The Coit Tower was built in 1933 with funds from Lillie Hitchcock Coit, an eccentric San Francisco resident (aren't they all?) who was saved by firemen as a girl and became a lifelong supporter of firemen. The concrete tower was constructed by Arthur Brown Jr., who also built the San Francisco's City Hall.
